Am I a Candidate for Facelift Surgery?

Am I a Candidate for Facelift Surgery?

One of the hardest parts of aging, aside from the aches and pains and possible health problems, is actually seeing yourself get older, which is most evident on the face. Sunspots, wrinkles, sagging skin and creases around the eyes can dramatically change a person’s appearance. If asked, most people 40 and over would say that they don’t feel their age, so why should they look their age? Facelift surgery is a common procedure done around the world to help individuals who want to refresh their look. In this article, we will explain what the procedure entails, and who would be a good candidate for it.

What is a Facelift?

Facelift is a term that is commonly used to refer to different procedures concentrating on someone’s face. Medically referred to as rhytidectomy, a facelift requires surgery in order to correct and/or improve the looks of someone’s face and neck.

What Can a Facelift Improve?

A facelift can actually correct various parts of the face and neck; The American Society of Plastic Surgeons provides this list of improvements that a facelift can offer:

  • Fixing saggy parts of the face
  • Fixing creases below the eyes
  • Fixing creases running between the nose and mouth
  • Refilling missing or sagging fat
  • Replenishing lost skin tone
  • Replenishing skin that has become loose, especially under the chin

What Can’t a Facelift Improve?

It is important to understand that while a facelift can rejuvenate an individual’s look to create a more youthful appearance, it will not drastically alter their look. For example, a facelift will not reshape the structure of your nose or mouth, but it will tighten your face to make you look like you did ten or twenty years ago. Another important thing to keep in mind is that a facelift will not stop you from aging further. While you will end up looking younger after the procedure, you will continue to age after it, possibly requiring further procedures down the line.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Facelift?

While a person of any age may want a facelift, not everyone is a good candidate for this surgical procedure. Below is a list of items that your plastic surgeon will consider before deciding whether to operate on your or not:

1. Good Health – A person considering undergoing a facelift must be in good health. Since this procedure requires surgery, the individuals must be able to endure it. Any pre-existing conditions will need to be disclosed, as they can pose additional risks during and after the procedure. For example, a person who is significantly overweight is not a good candidate for a facelift as that condition may lead to a higher risk of complications. As well, individuals will need to tell their doctor if they are taking any medication or supplements, as those can also increase risks or negative side effects. Furthermore, disclosing any drug allergies is necessary so that they are not used during the procedure.

2. Non-Smokers – Current smokers will not be allowed to undergo a facelift as they will have a higher risk of complications when going under general anesthesia. Heavy smokers will be advised to quit smoking a couple of months before the surgery.

3. Realistic Goals – A good candidate for a facelift will have realistic goals about what they want to look like after the procedure is done. While a facelift can definitely take years off a person’s face, it will not make an 70-year old look like a 20-year old. A doctor should be comfortable that the patient is of sound mind, knows the possible side effects and risks of the procedure, as well as having reasonable expectations of the results.

4. Skin Elasticity – Website Share Care offers the advice of Stephen Handisides, who works in Health Education, who explains that the “ideal candidate for this type of surgery will have good skin elasticity, a strong bone structure and loose skin on their face or neck. Because facelifts stretch the facial skin to remove wrinkles having supple, flexible skin will allow you to heal better.”

Facelifts are popular procedures for both men and women. They can raise self-esteem and allow individuals to feel better about themselves. While most who undergo this procedure are over 40, there are younger people who can benefit from it, as well.
