Chemical peeling of the facial skin is a commonly performed cosmetic procedure involving peeling of the surface layers of the facial skin using different forms of chemicals such as TCA. The purpose is to remove the layers of the skin that contains wrinkles, blemishes, acne scars, and other cosmetically unpleasant lesions. This allows for the re-growth of relatively smooth and beautiful skin. The procedure may be performed for non-facial skin as well.

  • Typically, this results in flaking and peeling of the skin over the next several days. The healing process will take several weeks. Initially, the skin will turn red, blister, and crust and will look like a very bad sunburn before it heals. You may require ointments and other medications at this time. The skin will turn darker (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) but return to normal color over a period of several weeks. During the healing phase, 10 days to 2 weeks, the appearance will be cosmetically unacceptable.
  • The procedure may need to be repeated several times to achieve optimum results.
  • Deep wrinkles or scars require multiple peels or deeper peels.
  • Deeper peels are associated with longer recovery times and a slightly higher risk of complications but better results.

DO NOT CONSIDER THIS PROCEDURE IF YOU HAVE USED ACCUTANE IN THE PAST 12 MONTHS! Please, inform your provider if you have any history of use with Accutane.

Facial cosmetic surgery is one of the most challenging aspects of cosmetic surgery. Everyday in life everyone sees your face, and it is the face that gives away the aging changes! Most women spend a lot of time making up the face and look at it numerous times a day in the mirror. Face can not be hidden unlike other parts of the body.
