Beautiful lips are an essential part of an attractive face. A beautiful smile can accomplish many things without speaking a word!
Lip enhancement can be performed both surgically and non-surgically.
Non-Surgical lip augmentation options:
For patients seeking an immediate improvement in the lips with minimal to no downtime a non-surgical lip enhancement procedure is indicated. This typically involves the injection of a soft tissue filler to plump the lips. This procedure is done with topical or local anesthesia. Many patients return to work or their regular activities immediately following the injections. You will see the results immediately. The most commonly used fillers provide results that last 3 to 6 months or longer. The most common problems are bruising and swelling that subsides within a few days
Involves injection of:
- Liquid silicone. Contrary to popular belief, reaction to silicone is extremely rare. The advantage is that the lips can move vary naturally unlike the implants.
- Fat transfer: Fat can be transferred using fat harvested during liposuction. However 30-60% 0f the fat transferred may not survive and the procedure often needs to be repeated.
- Restylane, Belotero, Juvederm and similar products are being introduced in the market rapidly. They last anywhere between 4-5 months and need to be repeated. Some like Juvederm claim to last longer. These products stimulate natural production of collagen, which shapes the lips. Restylane is one of the most common of these.
- Radiesse: This product gives a much longer results lasting up to 2 years. However this is not recommended for the lips because of its potential to cause tiny beads of cartilage that turns into bone.
This involves placement of permanent implants in the lips to fluff it up for beautiful lips. The implant is made up of e-PTFE, more commonly known as GORETEX, which has been used in the body for years with excellent results for many medical indications. Implant procedures can be performed entirely under local anesthesia alone. Some patients may request some sedation.
Liquid Silicone has been injected in the lips for a long time and are permanent. However, liquid silicone is technique dependent. Recently soft, solid, pre shaped silicone implants are available (Surgi-sil), which can be implanted similar to Advanta Implant.
Patients typically have swelling that takes about 4-6 days to subside. Bruising is uncommon and if it happens it takes about 10-14 days to resolve and can be easily camouflaged with makeup.
The major drawbacks of lip implants are:
In some patients, because of the thinness of tissues, the implant may be palpable to the patient, however this has rarely been a cause for concern. Very rarely the implant may be infected or extrude and may have to be removed.
